Service Highlights:
Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that occurs when the body is unable to properly regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes, and while they share some similarities, they differ significantly in terms of causes, treatment, and management.
Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes is primarily an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. As a result, people with Type 1 diabetes produce little to no insulin, a hormone needed to regulate blood sugar levels. While it can develop at any age, it is more commonly diagnosed in children, teenagers, and young adults. Genetic factors and autoimmune processes are the primary causes. Environmental triggers (like infections) might also play a role in triggering the autoimmune response.
Type 2 Diabetes: In Type 2 diabetes, the body either becomes resistant to insulin or the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels. It is more common in adults, though increasing rates are seen in children due to rising obesity levels. Family history and genetics play a role, as individuals with a family history of Type 2 diabetes are at higher risk. Poor diet, lack of physical activity, and obesity significantly increase the risk. The body’s cells become less responsive to insulin, meaning the pancreas has to produce more insulin to overcome this resistance.
A diabetes diet is a healthy eating plan that helps manage blood sugar levels and prevent complications. It focuses on a balanced intake of nutrients, emphasizing foods that are rich in fiber, lean proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates, while limiting foods high in refined sugars and unhealthy fats.
